When the initial video of Google Glass appeared online, many people automatically confused it with an AR device, which is, overlaying information on top of a live feed camera view. However, the first edition of Glass Explorers did not support any type of AR. Glass was “just” an tiny screen mounted over a eye glasses enclosure.

Enter Immersion

Late last year, Google introduced Immersion menus on the platform. These menus allow the simultaneous use of the camera and screen of Glass. Thus immersion menus effectively introduce the possibility of Glass to be used as an AR device.

Naturally, once this functionality was introduced, AR SDKs started to pour in to it. Mirage is how Metaio is calling this feature within their Junaio’s platform. Check out their presentation on the InsideAR conference 2013:

These are all great news for our apps, as now Glass can serve geolocated AR, which wasn’t previously possible on this platform. Needless to say we are closing following these developments so in the not so distant future we can integrate our platform to Glass, one way or the other.
