Top geolocated AR cities

Parliament_at_Sunset_phone_800

As the end of the year is approaching, we’ve decided to compile some stats. Without any further a do, here are the top 10 cities with geolocated AR users:

  1. London
  2. NYC
  3. Montreal (Metro/Subway)
  4. Rio de Janeiro
  5. Las Vegas
  6. Barcelona
  7. Boston
  8. Paris
  9. San Francisco
  10. Mexico DF

The fact that those cities have the most users doesn’t mean they’re the most explored on the AR world. For these category, the results are:

  1. NYC
  2. London
  3. Las Vegas
  4. Montreal (Metro/Subway)
  5. Boston
  6. San Francisco
  7. Rio de Janeiro
  8. Barcelona
  9. Paris
  10. Chicago

Data

The data was extracted from our apps, which focus on showing monuments, icons and landmarks of each of the cities they cover (except for Montreal). As you can see, the amount of users and the number of times the app (AR enhancement) it’s used, is similar, but not directly related. The lists are similar but not identical.

City population it’s not an indicative for quantity of use, as it is city exploration, that explains why Las Vegas is on the top five (on both list). Las Vegas is a relatively small city compared with the rest if the cities, nevertheless a city with great interest of exploring, maybe to avoid Hangovers 🙂

London & NYC, each draw an impressive amount of around 20 million tourists per year, so is no surprise they’re on top. Add to that, each of these cities surpass the 10 million population and you have a recipe for winning!

Surprisingly, Paris it’s not on the top, despite being on of the most beautiful and most visited cities on the world. By the same token, it’s a surprise that Rio de Janeiro is on the top. Given the tough conditions (crime wise) of the city, and the difficulty for having an smartphone among locals, we are more than glad that the cariocas show up on this list!

Boston, San Francisco & Barcelona are jewels of cities, so it’s a well earned spot.

Those are the top 10, that didn’t meant the other cities are less important. We expect for the next year, a surge in use for the Chinese cities (Shanghai, Hong Kong & Beijing). We’ll have to wait for the next year to see how it went.
